Our Campus & History

Open Window School began in 1983 as a preschool for gifted children based on the premise that its students were "children first, gifted second." In 1985, the school was incorporated and expanded to include an elementary program.

OWS has matured into an established elementary school, Kindergarten through the 5th Grade with a clear mission and strong philosophy. We are known as a warm, nurturing school community that provides support and challenge for our students. Teachers are highly trained and bring an extraordinary dedication to their work. Involved parents supported the school in numerable ways, and the Board of Trustees set ambitious goals for the school's future.

Vista Academy is the unique middle school division that complements our elementary program. As a result of this innovative collaboration, Vista Academy/Open Window School offers specialized education, Kindergarten through 8th grade, on a beautiful campus on Cougar Mountain. Set atop a gently rolling hill, the 6.7 acres boast expansive views. Vista Academy and Open Window School are on the same site, allowing for natural and positive interaction students of varying ages as well as leadership opportunities for Vista students.

Since its beginning, Open Window School has maintained a strong community that is united in spirit, energy, and enthusiasm. OWS is a school that cherishes individual initiative, collaboration, and creative thinking. Those qualities are fostered in our educational approaches, and they have been at the heart of our addition of a middle school. Belief in the school mission and dedication to our extraordinary students continue to inspire us as we expand and grow.
