Open Window School nurtures and challenges students of high intellectual ability and inspires them to new levels of academic excellence, creativity, and personal accomplishment for participation in a changing world.

Since its inception, Open Window School has been fully dedicated to meeting the needs of highly capable children. At the heart of our philosophy is an understanding and appreciation of our students as unique, complex human beings. Throughout their years at Open Window School, students are cared for, first and foremost, as children who are in the vital process of discovering themselves and the world around them. By offering challenge balanced with support, we develop their understanding of what they can do and what they can contribute.

We emphasize innovation, problem solving, and independent thinking along with strong academic skills.  Individualized curriculum provides rigor in a child’s areas of strength while building a strong basic foundation. Students develop self-confidence as learners who can tackle demanding problems and enjoy grappling with new ideas. Creative thinking and expression are fostered throughout the program. Classes in drama, art, movement, physical education, music, computers, Spanish, and library resources lend further enrichment to the core curriculum.

Our students bring with them a range of personal traits that contribute to their unique learning requirements: intensity, perfectionism, preference for complexity over simplicity, and passion for their interests. Some exhibit extraordinary ability in a few areas but, often, not in others. Emotional development and intellectual level may also be uneven, which can result in conflict and frustration. 

In addition to offering stimulating academics, we nurture positive social skills and emotional resiliency.Social awareness and conflict resolution are fostered not only through daily interpersonal exchanges, and in play, but also through our curriculum. We instill respect for others through systematic instruction and by modeling. All children are valued for their individual attributes, and students discover the necessity and rewards of cooperation through collaborative class activities.
